What "open source SEO" actually means
Open source means you can read and modify the code. Lighthouse qualifies. Most SEO tools do not.

Why it matters. Lab scores are reproducible. Field data in GSC tells you what real users experience. You need both. Lighthouse is the lab half.
Limitation. Lab data only. A perfect Lighthouse score does not guarantee rankings. It guarantees you are not failing obvious technical checks.
4. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools
What it covers. Site audit, backlink profile, and top pages for verified sites — free without a paid Ahrefs subscription.
Setup. Sign up, verify site ownership, run the audit.

Real workflow. Stop exporting CSVs from GSC every week. Build one dashboard that updates automatically. Send it to yourself Monday morning. Spend the saved time fixing pages instead of formatting spreadsheets.
Limitation. Setup takes an afternoon. Not a keyword research tool. Easy to build a pretty dashboard that nobody acts on.
6. Rank Math (free tier)
What it covers. WordPress SEO plugin: schema types, sitemaps, redirects, 404 monitor, editor feedback.
Setup. Install from the WordPress plugin directory. Run the setup wizard. Connect Search Console if you want inline data.
Real workflow. Rank Math handles plumbing — canonicals, sitemaps, basic schema. It does not tell you which title to rewrite based on GSC data. Use it as the layer under your content decisions, not as the decision maker.
