The WordPress SEO Checklist 2026, with items being worked through and checked off across its six categories

How to use this checklist: Work through each category in order. Initial Setup items are done once. Technical, on-page, and content items apply to every new post and page you publish. Ongoing Optimization items run weekly and monthly. The most impactful single action: check your Search Console weekly for striking-distance keywords (positions 5–15) and optimize the relevant pages.

Initial Setup

Complete these once when launching or auditing a new WordPress site.

Install an SEO plugin (Rank Math or Yoast SEO)

Run the setup wizard to configure sitemaps, schema defaults, and Search Console connection.

Verify site in Google Search Console

Use the HTML tag method through your SEO plugin settings.

Submit XML sitemap to Search Console

URL is typically yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml or yourdomain.com/sitemap_index.xml.

Set permalink structure to "Post name"

WordPress → Settings → Permalinks → Post name.

Confirm HTTPS is enabled

yourdomain.com should redirect to https://yourdomain.com in a single hop, no intermediary redirects.

Add Organization/WebSite schema

Configure in Rank Math → Titles & Meta → Global or Yoast → Search Appearance → General.

Set correct timezone in WordPress settings

WordPress → Settings → General → Timezone. Affects publishedAt dates in schema.

Technical SEO

Run these checks on a monthly basis and after any major site changes.

Check robots.txt is not blocking important content

Visit yourdomain.com/robots.txt. Confirm /wp-content/ is accessible and there is no Disallow: /.

Noindex thin archive pages

Noindex author archives (single-author sites), date archives, and empty tag archives via your SEO plugin.

Noindex paginated pages beyond page 3

Configure in SEO plugin → Taxonomies → Archives settings.

Check Search Console for crawl errors

GSC → Coverage → Not Indexed. Investigate any pages that should be indexed but are not.

Confirm Core Web Vitals are green

GSC → Experience → Core Web Vitals. LCP under 2.5s, CLS under 0.1, INP under 200ms on mobile.

Check mobile usability

GSC → Experience → Mobile Usability. Zero errors is the target.

Fix redirect chains (3+ hops)

Use Screaming Frog to find and collapse redirect chains to direct 301s.

Validate structured data

Use Google Rich Results Test on key pages. Fix any errors in the schema output.

Confirm no duplicate content issues

GSC → Coverage → Excluded → "Duplicate without user-selected canonical". Canonicalize any duplicate pairs.

On-Page SEO

Complete these items for every post or page you publish.

Set a focus keyword in your SEO plugin

Rank Math Focus Keyword or Yoast Focus Keyphrase. One primary keyword per page.

Write a descriptive title tag under 60 characters

Include the focus keyword in the first 40 characters. Add a specificity modifier ("2026", "step-by-step", etc.).

Write a compelling meta description under 155 characters

Lead with the outcome the reader gets. Use active voice. Include the focus keyword naturally.

Include focus keyword in the H1

The H1 is typically the post title in WordPress. Confirm it contains the focus keyword.

Use H2 subheadings for major sections

Break content into sections. Each H2 should correspond to a distinct subtopic or question.

Include focus keyword in first 100 words

Google passage-level indexing weights early content heavily. Do not bury the keyword far down the page.

Add alt text to every image

Descriptive alt text with the focus keyword where natural. Do not keyword-stuff.

Set a canonical URL for every page

Handled automatically by Rank Math and Yoast. Verify for any custom page templates.

Add internal links to 2–3 related posts

Use descriptive anchor text containing the target keyword of the linked page.

Link out to 1–2 authoritative external sources

Citing relevant, high-quality sources improves perceived content quality.

Content Quality

Apply these standards to every piece of content before publishing.

Minimum 600 words for any indexable post

Thin pages under 300 words should either be expanded or noindexed.

Answer the search query directly in the first 2 sentences

For each section H2, answer the implied question in the first 50 words.

Include at least one structured element per major section

Numbered list, comparison table, definition block, or step-by-step sequence.

Add a FAQ section for informational content

6–8 genuine questions with 2–4 sentence answers. Improves AI Overview citation probability.

Add a "Last updated:" date at the top of the post

Visible freshness signals improve click-through rate and AI Overview preference for timely content.

Include original data, specific examples, or first-person experience

Generic content does not rank or get cited by AI systems. Specificity is the differentiator.

Avoid thin AI-generated content without editorial review

AI drafts should be reviewed and edited before publishing. Unreviewed bulk AI content risks Helpful Content penalties.

Schema Markup

Configure schema for each content type on your site.

Article schema on all blog posts

Auto-generated by Rank Math and Yoast with correct setup. Verify author.name, datePublished, dateModified, and image are present.

FAQPage schema on pages with FAQ sections

Add via Rank Math Schema tab or Yoast block. Only apply where there is genuine Q&A content.

HowTo schema on step-by-step guides

List each step with a name and description. Required properties: name, step, image (optional but recommended).

BreadcrumbList schema on all pages

Enable breadcrumbs in your theme. Rank Math and Yoast generate BreadcrumbList schema automatically.

Product schema on WooCommerce product pages

Requires Rank Math Pro or Yoast for WooCommerce add-on. Include name, price, availability, image, and sku.

Review/AggregateRating where real reviews exist

Only add review schema when actual user reviews are present. Do not add static fake ratings.

Ongoing Optimization

Run these tasks on a weekly or monthly cadence to maintain and grow rankings.

Check Search Console for new striking-distance keywords weekly

Filter Performance report to position 5–15, sort by impressions. These are your highest-ROI optimization targets.

Update titles and metas on striking-distance pages

Rewrite title with keyword earlier, add specificity modifier. Should move CTR within 14 days.

Review GSC coverage for new exclusions monthly

Pages moving from Indexed to Excluded signal a technical or content quality problem.

Refresh content on posts older than 12 months

Update statistics, add new sections, update the "Last updated" date. Fresh content outranks stale content for time-sensitive queries.

Build internal links from new posts to old posts

Every new post should link to 2–3 existing relevant posts. Go back and add links to old posts from new content too.

Monitor Core Web Vitals for regressions after plugin updates

Run PageSpeed Insights after any major plugin update. Plugin updates commonly introduce CWV regressions.

Run a full Screaming Frog crawl quarterly

Catch accumulating issues: new broken links, redirect chains, missing metadata, thin pages.

Review AI Overview appearances in Search Console

GSC → Performance → Search appearance filter → AI Overviews. Track which pages are being cited.
